Carmine is a widely used pigment for cosmetics, very popular for its natural origin, unique bluish-pink shade, and heat stability. But this pigment derives from carminic acid, extracted from insects, and is facing a ban from consumers and brands looking for vegan ingredients. This episode describes the use of carmine, how it is labeled, and the challenges facing formulators who want to develop carmine-free formulas. We also present what options Kobo offers to replace this raw material.
