Check out this incredible woman who changed the world of education! Maria Montessori was born on August 31, 1870, in Italy, and was the first woman to graduate from the University of Rome's medical school. She emphasized hands-on, experiential learning, encouraged children to work at their own pace and follow their own interests. She also excelled academically, was naturally good in school and interested in biology and mathematics.
