Joe Stitzlein is a Co-Founder, Executive Creative Director and Type Designer at Stitzlein Studio. He worked with Steve Jobs to define Apple’s photography and packaging standards, and with Michelle Obama to launch her Let’s Move program for healthy schools. I designed iconic identities for Netflix, Nike Flyknit, dwell magazine and Mac OS X and built a global design studio at Google. He had designed typefaces in every major writing system globally and created campaigns that made Nike Free the world’s best selling shoe.

Before starting Stitzlein Studio, Joe worked as Executive Creative Director for the Google Brand Studio and Senior Global Creative Director at Nike; his work has been featured in Adweek, the AIGA annual, the Annual of the Type Director’s Club, Atlantic Cities, the Annual of the AIA, D&AD, fastcodesign.com and at Cannes, amongst others.

In this episode, Joe had shared great insights on typography and spoke on what is the difference between a typeface and a font and how to choose a perfect typeface and font pair from millions of available choices. In the latter part, we discussed how we craft typography for accessibility and inclusiveness and ended the show by Joe recommending some tips to young designers on how to start their journey into typeface design and build attractive portfolios.
