On Aug 9,2014 a crime occurred in the City of Ferguson Mo.. An 18 year old black male committed a strong-arm robbery at a convenience store. A short time later Michael Brown identified as the robber was fatally shot by Darren Wilson, 28, a white police officer. The circumstances of the shooting received much attention not only in the U.S. but around the world. The shooting sparked riots and protests that continued for more than a week. Neither a St Louis County or a Dept. of Justice investigation found enough evidence to indict Wilson. On July 17, 2014, Eric Garner died in Staten Island, New York City, after a police officer put him in what has been described as a “chokehold” during an arrest. The New York City Medical Examiner’s Office attributed Garner’s death to a combination of a chokehold, compression of his chest, and poor health.

NYPD officers approached Garner for selling “loosies” (single cigarettes). Officer Daniel Pantaleo took Garner’s wrist behind his back and Garner resisted. Garner was grabbed neck and pulled backwards and down onto the ground. Officers attempted to restrain Garner, who repeated at least eleven times “I can’t breathe.”

Freddie Gray died on April 19, a week after suffering a critical spinal injury in the back of a police van while being arrested in Baltimore. His death spurred days of protests followed by rioting and looting in the Maryland city.

Six officers have been charged with crimes ranging from misdemeanor assault to ‘depraved-heart’ murder, after bystanders said they heard Grey heard screaming in pain as he was put into the van.

He continued to scream during the journey, during which he was put in additional restraints. He was eventually given medical attention but slipped into a coma.

Recently an unarmed suspect was shot and killed while burglarizing and committing malicious mischief by damaging vehicles in Arlington Texas. The suspects name was Christian Taylor 19. At this time it’s unclear what happened inside the building. The only thing known for certain is that he should not have been breaking the law.

The video footage of South Carolina man Walter Scott being shot in the back as he ran from North Charleston police officer Michael Slager is once again putting attention on the large number of Americans who are killed by police.
