Letterkenny University Hospital among most overcrowded in April

Letterkenny University Hospital was among the most overcrowded facilities in Ireland in April.

In a statement today, the INMO says that a worrying trend of overcrowding across the country has continued, particularly in the north west and west.

Figures released today by the INMO show that a total of 594 people waited for a bed at Letterkenny over the course of the month.

The figure makes it the fifth most overcrowded hospital in Ireland for April but it reflects an increase compared to the 513 people who were waiting in April 2023.

In Sligo, meanwhile, 456 people waited for a bed in April of this year, which reflects a decrease in last year’s figure of 588.

The INMO say that members are reporting that challenges associated with overcrowding are being worsened by the HSE’s recruit moratorium and that the level of overcrowding shows the HSE has not learned any lessons in relation to reducing the number of patients on trolleys.

Donegal Sinn Féin TD Pádraig Mac Lochlainn says the recruitment moratorium has had devastating impacts both on patients and staff:
