The Agriculture Minister believes that the EU Migration Pact will be crucial in providing an adequate system for dealing with the issue.

A Dail debate took place last evening on whether Ireland should opt in to the Pact.

The Government announced last March it would be opting into the pact, which will introduce legally-binding process times for dealing with applications for asylum.

However it's been angrily criticised in many quarters, as taking 'a heavy handed approach'.

Speaking in the Dail, Donegal TD and Agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue says this challenge will be us for many years to come and says it’s not possible for Ireland to handle it alone:
