The winter holidays are here and with them another episode.
Albeit a few days late. It may have been recorded on Dec. 23, but with everything going on and all the baking I've done releasing the episode has taken longer than expected. That said, this episode is seasonally appropriate, in that I discuss traditions.
I'm always of two minds about traditions. They are both good and bad, because they bind us and divide us. They connect us to one another, and by reiterating a tradition on an annual basis we reconnect with friends, families, our communities. At the same time they are so readily used to exclude people.
Avoiding that exclusion is important to me as both a parent and an immigrant. So now that I have a kid it's required me to stop and think about what traditions from my family and culture I want to mingle with those of my wife's. As mentioned before, I'm a third culture kid, which means I'm already mixing a lot. My daughter is even more so. And we don't even have religious elements to add to the mix.
For the moment we're largely adopting Finland Swedish traditions, with a few American or more international elements added in for fun and flavor. Basically I roast a Turkey, when family lets me, and make stuffing for holiday meals. It is hard for me to identify what's an American tradition given the grand experiment the US is and how it mixes and mingles from all cultures. I guess ultimately I'm just bringing the ones I like from my family. So playing cards and christmas stockings.
