Today we're talking with Brittney Moses, exploring the psychology that affects us mentally and physically as we're deconstructing and healing from church hurt. What are some signs of a healthy vs. unhealthy church community? Why is deconstruction so uncomfortable, and why can it take so long to heal from hurt? What can we do to help ourselves along that healing process? What are corrective experiences, and why are they so important?
I LOVED this interview and can't wait to share it with you. Welcome back to "Outgrowing the Good Christian Girl"!
XOXO, Tiffany
HERE ARE TODAY'S QUESTIONS:
Q1: What does deconstruction mean to you? (@4:30)
Q2: Let's start with a discussion on spiritual hurt. Many of us feel hesitant about reading the Bible or going to church, because those things can feel so triggering. Is that normal? Why does that happen and what does it mean? (@10:13)
Q3: Let's talk about the message that once you start skipping church, you're going to lose your faith. Is it ever necessary to take a break from church to heal? Why or why not? And if we do decide to take a break, how can we do that in a healthy way without losing our faith? (@13:36)
Q4: What are some tips you have for easing back into church and/or Bible reading if we've taken a break? How do we even know if we're ready to get back to those things? Is there ever a time when we need to push through hard feelings? (@20:55)
Q5: Can you talk about corrective experiences, and why those are so important? (@25:18)
Q6: What are some signs of a healthy church, and how can we figure that out before we get too invested? (@27:53)
Q7: A lot of us have this fear of being deceived and having the wrong theology. What are your thoughts on those fears? How do they affect our faith and mental health, and how do we move out of that fear-based Christianity? (@35:08)
Q8: Do you have any last tips for coping skills or ways to help yourself as you're trying to heal, or putting yourself back in these environments? (@43:35)
Q9: As we wrap up this interview, I have two final questions. First, let’s go to a bird’s eye view again. Part of deconstruction is asking: What parts of my faith do I bring forward with me, and what parts do I leave behind? So I’m asking all my guests: Do you have any examples of this in your own life that you’d feel comfortable sharing? (@47:20)
Q10: Lastly, you have a ton of resources for people who are trying to navigate faith, deconstruction, and mental health. Can you tell us about these? Where else can my listeners find you? (@52:20)
