In todays episode Elaine chats with New Zealand performer and choreographer Sacha Copland about her new show Anatomy of Accounts. We chat the creation of the show, what we are actually worth, how amazing our bodies are and the work that we need to do as white people to break down misogyny, racism, homophobia and so much more and how we do this with out getting defensive. Natural growth doesn’t make sense in a world tightly commanded by economics - and prolific choreographer Sacha Copland of Java Dance Theatre (Back of the Bus, 2014) has something to say about it. A show for lovers of the body (and accountants), Anatomy for Accountants is a passionate, new dance-theatre show about giving bodies back their full range. Copland prices every aspect of her own life to deconstruct how we define and understand our own worth whilst celebrating the body. Joined by live musician and performer Tristan Carter in the role of number-crunching Chief Financial Officer, Copland crafts a deeply creative, vulnerable meditation on her own human form - pricing her limbs, head, and organs nude for the audience to see and intimately experience. Lilting between gentle and brutal, soft and dark, universal and personal, Anatomy for Accountants examines how our value changes and shifts across our lived experiences; how every forced or pressured YES or each resolute or exhausted NO impacts how we are received by others, and if we depreciate or increase in value in their eyes. Holding the audience in a charged yet ultimately compassionate embrace, Anatomy for Accountants references deep family histories, personal anecdotes, what we owe the future, and how the body holds onto it all - showing us that, in the end, it is simply enough to exist. Through Copland’s creative search to reunite with herself, the show celebrates the expansive nature of humanity and our own thrilling ability to be alive.
