When did you last update your resume?
If you are anything like me, you have multiple versions of the same thing buried in Google Drive. Because the resume is dead, it's time to find a new and improved way of showing others that your value deserves to be recognized. And that is challenging to do on a single sheet of paper.
This week on the podcast, I sit down with Julie Sandler-Sacks, who has made her career out of advertising, first as a copywriter and then as a recruiter. I asked her to wear both hats in our conversation, and I am confident you will like what you hear.
As a career professional and an entrepreneur, I know the value of telling your story while giving others a behind-the-scenes peak at how awesome you are. But that piece of paper gets me every time. It's a buzz kill! It never truly highlights your strengths, and at the end of the day, no one gets a sense of who you are by chronologically reading your accomplishments.
As a recruiter, Julie's perspective is on the money! When it came time for me to toss my hat in the ring for the position I ultimately captured, Julie said, "let's create a non-traditional resume for a non-traditional candidate.
And it worked!!
Highlights
5:08|How advertising has changed to become more sales-oriented
6:33|Why it’s important and encouraged to try different jobs
10:01|Generally, your resume doesn’t show much and what to do instead
12:07|Non-traditional way of writing your resume: be unique, creative, yet cautious
18:40|LinkedIn is a helpful place to find information and create connections
23:14|You can’t rely on your resume alone. Show them you want the job by being creative and persistent to show them you are a desirable candidate
26:16|When it comes to writing or rewriting your resume, the number one tip is to be pithy!
