is disco real? can disco be defined by its musical elements and if so, what are they? what are the relationships between disco and the genres that preceded and succeeded it? who produced and consumed disco? can disco be defined by its social utility and what it meant to the people who consumed it? what effects did the process of commercialization have on “disco” and how does that influence people’s perceptions of disco at the time as well as from our historical perspective? what changes in dance music during the 1970s and 1980s can be attributed to technological advances and new or inexpensive consumer goods? what were the impacts of the social and political environments of the time?
