The Civil Applications Committee (CAC) is working on tracking an asteroid called Apus that will have a close approach to Earth in 2029. The CAC aims to raise awareness and gather remote sensing information about the asteroid, which could potentially cause significant damage if it were to impact the planet or even pass through the geo belt where satellites are located. 🛰️ The Apophis asteroid will have a close approach to Earth in 2029, posing a threat to satellites in the geo belt. 💡 The CAC aims to gather remote sensing information and imagery of the asteroid to enhance space situational awareness. 🚀 NASA is funding the CAC’s work and will be sending a mission to investigate the asteroid. 🌌 The CAC sees this as a unique opportunity for the geospatial community to collaborate and utilize resources to study the asteroid. 💥 The asteroid’s size (about 340m) makes it capable of causing significant damage if it were to impact Earth or pass through the geo belt. 🔭 Different sensors, such as hyperspectral and SAR, are being considered for analyzing the asteroid’s composition and behavior.
