Maths is everywhere. It allows us to fly planes, make music, initiate the perfect lunge in fencing, and add up all the numbers on a roulette wheel (the total comes to 666, by the way.) All the things that Bruce loves…so shame he got a C in it for his GCSE! In this, the final episode of the series then, Bruce and @TheRealDrKev attend to some unfinished business as they are joined by the writer and quantum physicist, Dr Michael Brooks, bearing weapons of math instruction. What exactly is maths, they ask? Did we discover it or invent it? Is it out there in the ‘real world’ or just ‘in our heads’? As they start to put two and two together, they pick up some ingenious life hacks…how choosing numbers over 31 can maximise your chances of winning a jackpot on the lottery; how the ‘37% Rule’ can help you find your ideal home, car, or partner; and, in the Philosophy World Cup, why Heisenberg should never take a penalty and Schrödinger managed to score 2 goals simultaneously.
Dr Michael Brooks is the bestselling author of The Maths That Made Us: How Numbers Created Civilisation (published as "The Art of More" in the US). He is co-host (with Radio 5 Live breakfast show host Rick Edwards) of the Eureka! podcast.
