A Discourse on Thankfulness Thomas Goodwin -1600-1679- Thomas Goodwin was an English Puritan and proponent of Congregational church government. He fled to Holland in 1639 when persecuted for his beliefs, but returned to London at the outbreak of the English Civil Wars in 1641, establishing a church at St. Dunstan's-in-the-East. During the Commonwealth, Goodwin was frequently called upon to preach before Parliament, and was elected a member of the Westminster Assembly. He was eventually made president of Oxford University, but was stripped of this post upon the return of the monarchy. He chose to stay and serve his congregation during the plague of 1665 and subsequent Great Fire of London in the following year.
