Derrick Walker, INDYCAR President of Competition and Operations, and George Bruggenthies, Road America President and General Manager, announced the series’ return to the iconic track on Saturday, August 8. Slipstream Network’s Dusty Michael was in attendance for the announcement and we’ve got audio from both.
The event is set for June 24–26, 2016 and will feature the Verizon IndyCar Series as well as all three rungs of the Mazda Road to Indy development ladder and the Pirelli World Challenge GT and GTS classes. Going back to Road America was a priority for Walker.

“A big day for IndyCar. We’re back. Road America has always had a special place in open wheel racing and IndyCar needs to be here.”

Bruggenthies and Walker spent a good deal of time to make the deal happen. There were many details to work out between the series and the track since all previous Indy car races at the venue have been run under different sanction, either CART or Champ Car.

“It’s multi-year agreement. We understand that the future of IndyCar needs to be here at Road America and we’ve successfully done that.”

On the topic of the continuation of a Verizon IndyCar Series round at the oldest racing circuit in the world, the Milwaukee Mile, Walker feels that the Road America announcement does not negatively affect Milwaukee in any way.

“Milwaukee is very similar to Elkhart Lake to us. It’s a classic track. It’s a track that IndyCar does really well. We don’t see Milwaukee going off our schedule.”

Walker went on to suggest that the future of both Road America and the Milwaukee Mile may involve co-promotion due to the proximity of the two venues and the number fans in the region. With Bruggenthies’ help, Walker said that “Milwaukee is still very much on the list” of possible 2016 dates for the Verizon IndyCar Series.

Bruggenthies noted that the deal was complicated and had just been completed, hence the announcement at the track with Walker. In response to expected demand from fans, Road America is offering a $100 offer for four day admission, garage admission, free program, and free parking as a special limited time offer.
