Picket at Pick N Pay to Demand Solid Commitment to Use Cage-Free Eggs

Through the Open Wing Alliance, the Southern African Faith Communities Environment Institute is organising a non-violent picket at the Pick ʼn Pay corporate office in Cape Town. They request that Pick ʼn Pay guarantee that all eggs sold are 100% cage-free by 2030. The two organisations met with the retailer last week. A recent investigation by the Open Wing Alliance revealed that Pick ʼn Pay is supporting animal cruelty by sourcing their eggs from farms that practice cruel battery cage farming. According to the organisation, battery cage farming is a lousy way of keeping hens. It causes suffering to millions of layers that cannot do anything natural or essential. In an interview with Radio Islam International, SAFCEI’s Wayne du Plessis claimed that no progress had been made after several interactions with the pick-n-pay management on the inhumane practice of battery cage farming.
