Meteorology, the science of the atmosphere, is where the secrets of the clime are decoded, transforming complex patterns of air, water, and temperature into precise weather predictions that impact our daily lives. In Bharat, we have had indigenous techniques of meteorology that have helped myriad activities, from agriculture and trade to the building of civil society and military infrastructure, since millennia. Acharya Varahamihira's seminal text, the Brihatsamhita illustrates the sophisticated understanding of atmospheric processes that existed in ancient India, while Acharya Chanakya's Arthashastra documents systematic measurements of rainfall and their implications for national revenue and disaster relief efforts. Methodologies for undertaking meteorology included the use of bio-indicators and Panchang (the traditional Hindu calendar), and while we have come to an age of cutting-edge technological interventions for meteorological predictions, it is remains fascinating to see the multidisciplinary approach of the Bharatiya people when it came to meteorology, even as the technical and scientific verifiability and reliability of these methods must be studied closely in the modern context.
