In this episode, Emily Weiss, Ph.D., CAAB, answers questions about the 5th Annual ASPCA #HelpAHorse Day Contest, a national campaign running from April 26 - June 30, 2018 that is squarely focused on finding good homes for Horses. Wondering how you can get involved in helping Horses? What step to take next? Looking for an Adoptable Horse? You are in the right spot! Be sure to follow Real Horse Rescues on Facebook because that’s where we’ll post upcoming episodes, updates, and calls for guests and story submissions. This is our 1st episode! Our debut guest Dr. Emily Weiss, is the Vice President of Equine Welfare at the ASPCA, a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist, and a lifelong horse owner and trainer. She is the visionary who is strategically uniting and empowering Equine Rescue organizations across America with the resources and tools to ensure Equines nationwide have good welfare and the best possible opportunities to find long-term and loving homes. This is a great dialogue for both Equine Rescue Organizations and Prospective Adopters to learn new pathways to engage with each other and help Horses. Throughout the conversation, Dr. Weiss addresses complex questions with articulate answers backed up by science, practical application, and common sense solutions. > How do Rescue Organizations reach new People who are interested, and capable of Adopting a Horse? > Can successful themes that have helped Dogs & Cats find homes, be applied to Horses? > What do we need to rethink in the Equine Sector to break down barriers that are preventing Horses from finding good homes? Learn about the Adoption Process, different types of Adoptable Horses, where to look, what to expect, and how to strengthen the Horse-Human Bond with a newly Adopted Horse. Dr. Weiss is a huge proponent of all sorts of enrichment for Horses. She is emphatic that new Adopters start a Horse off [in a new environment] by engaging his or her brain. This she says will help decrease the Horse's stress and give a real relationship time to develop. She believes that one of the biggest risks to the Horse-Human Bond is unrealistic expectations. If you are interested in getting involved in the Equine Welfare Community, Dr. Weiss says dig in, get hands-on, and create relationships!
