After making it through a lengthy interview where you are discussing all of your experience, skills and education the recruiter or hiring manager asks you a (seemingly) benign question, "so, tell me about your hobbies".
If this question bothers you, then you're not alone. A LinkedIn News editor was hit with quite a lot of strong responses to an article written on this topic and we too have thoughts!
"Ever been stumped by a question about your hobbies during a job interview? When hiring managers raise the question, what are they looking for in an answer? In the latest edition of Get Hired Canada, recruiters and hiring managers weigh in on whether they ask candidates how they spend their free time, and what kind of answers make a candidate stand out."
In this episode we are going to discuss the often difficult process of finding the right hire - but does it have to be so difficult?
Could we solve this issue by:

  • focusing on what the role actually needs to be executed on successfully
  • matching education, skillset and experience to the technical function of a role
  • stop hiring for personality and hire for technical capability

Some interesting questions to consider as we discuss this topic!
We'd love to hear your thoughts on this too - what did we miss, what don't we know?
