A friend of mine is a really talented designer and an amazing painter as well.

And he makes most of his money doing corporate design work and makes a little bit of money by selling his paintings.

He would like to flip that. He would love for his full-time vocation to be painting and selling paintings.

He greets it with a little trepidation because he enjoys the hobby of painting and having ultimate freedom.

What does it mean, when he starts to get commissioned for work?

Does that take away the freedom that he enjoys in his painting?

So I asked him, "What is it that you love about painting?"

He said, "It's the freedom to do whatever I want." C

an he create a business that allows him to access that kind of freedom?

Conversely, could he access that kind of freedom in his design work?

This is an important question to ask is if you're not doing the work you love right now.

It might not be the medium it might not be the job title. It might be what you get out of it.

So the question to ask is, what is it about the work that you love—that you love?

Start there.
