1 Peter 1:13-21

The Big Idea—Real hope is made of unshakable confidence and joyful expectancy in the person and work of Jesus and makes the real life difference of fueling holiness in the life of a Christian. Real hope is the fuel and foundation of real holiness.

What are the real, objective reasons that give Christians hope?

Real hope is established by the precious blood of Christ.

Real hope is sustained by the resurrection of Christ from the dead.

Peter’s first sermon at Pentecost—“this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it (Acts 2:23-24).”

Real hope eagerly anticipates the return of Christ.

C. S. Lewis wrote in Mere Christianity, “Hope is one of the Theological Virtues. This means that a continual looking forward to the eternal world is not (as some modern people think) a form of escapism or wishful thinking, but one of the things a Christian is meant to do.”

How do we experience and enjoy real hope?

We experience and enjoy real hope by preparing our minds for action.

We experience and enjoy real hope by being sober-minded.

We experience and enjoy real hope in community.

Two aspects of our holiness—

1) positional holiness

2) practicing holiness.

Paul wrote, “For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, ‘This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’ For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes (1 Corinthians 11:23-26).”
