Introduction

Water Bottles

Nalgenes

Yeti

Hydroflask

Introduction

This draws extensively from Jocko Willink and Leif Babin's book Extreme Ownership and Jocko Willink's podcast (Jocko Podcast).

10/10 for both, would strongly recommend to everyone, not just oper8or types (fire/ems/cops/mil)

Discipline

Definition

Doing what you're supposed to do, even when no one is looking or nothing will be held to you

This is simple, it's just not easy

DISCIPLINE EQUALS FREEDOM

Discipline as a team

Teams develop discipline in operation and can function more effectively, and with more functional freedom

Example: air crew, specific disciplined actions allow easy operation if something goes wrong

Example: pit crew CPR

Example: coordinated initial attack for structure fires

Discipline with equipment

Take care of your equipment - don't damage equipment beyond need

Return equipment ready for use

Fuel the saws

Pack the hose beds nicely and with discipline

Restock the med kit

Wash the truck

Replace the linens

Equipment put back in service ASAP, this is critical for your mission!

Discipline with self

Maintaining a professional appearance at work

Maintaining personal fitness

Maintaining your skills

Train with others

Insist on working with your crew some, go out and drill if you're bored

Discipline with subordinates

"It’s not what you preach, it's what you tolerate"

You don't have to be hard on everyone, but don't tolerate unsafe or improper or poor actions

Insist in your crew being ready for the mission as best as you can

Even if you aren't the C/O of your crew

Discipline as an organization

"You can’t run your firehouse like a three ring circus and expect it to function like the marine corps when the bell goes off."

Organizations need to develop and maintain a culture where members make the right choices without any need for enforcement or outside discipline.

Every member contributes to this- when you anywhere on the food chain maintains the discipline, you influence those around you to be better.
