Joaquín Hortal is a biogeographer and community
ecologist working at the Museo Nacional de
Ciencias Naturales (Natural History Museum) of
the Spanish Scientific Council in Madrid. He also
collaborates with the Centre for Ecology,
Evolution and Environmental Changes of the
University of Lisbon, and the Department of
Ecology of the Federal University of Goiás in
Brazil, and Before he worked at the University of
the Azores, University of Copenhagen and Imperial College London.
He studies the effects of current and past
environmental conditions and ecological processes
on the geographic patterns of biodiversity, the
role of species niche and ecological interactions
in the organization of biological communities in
time and space, and the use and misuse of
biodiversity big data. He works with mosses, seed
plants, vertebrates and insects, and has been
studying the ecology and biogeography of dung beetles for more than 25 years.
