Säkerhet ligger högst upp på listan när John Ricketts jobbar med kommunikationen mellan häst och människa. Han menar att många farliga situationer, exempelvis med hästar som reagerar kraftigt vid lastning, kan undvikas genom att i en kontrollerad miljö förbereda hästen för pressade situationer.

Enligt John Ricketts är de naturliga reaktionerna för en häst som blir skrämd eller pressad att antingen A. fly, B. bli paralyserad eller C. bli aggressiv. Reaktionen han i stället söker efter är D. lyssna och var mjuk ("be soft"). Han jobbar sig fram dit genom att i långsam takt exponera hästen för rörelser, ljud och andra potentiellt läskiga fenomen.

John Ricketts har en bakgrund som jockey i Storbritannien och utbildade sig efter flytten till Sverige till hovslagare, innan han började arbeta med kommunikation och problemlösning för drygt 20 år sedan.
