Acting Prime Minister Winston Peters is demanding more answers about the grounding of the Interislander Aratere ferry. Leaked documents show a crew member pushed the wrong button, accidently triggering the auto pilot early and sending the Aratere onto the wrong course. The ship ran aground shortly after departing Picton on the night of June 21. New Zealand First previously suggested on social media site X that someone onboard the vessel put the autopilot on, went for a coffee, then couldn't turn the autopilot off. New Zealand first leader and acting Prime Minister Winston Peters spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
