A mediados de la década de los 80 el rock alternativo es ya una realidad. Algunos de aquellos grupos procedentes del underground han alcanzado popularidad y las grandes discográficas comienzan a interesarse por las bandas con mayor repercusión. Muchas de ellas dan el salto a una multinacional y algunas consiguieron alcanzar la cima comercial, especialmente con la explosión del grunge, momento en que lo alternativo se transformó en mainstream.
