Today we talk about the trap of moralism where Christians focus on keeping the letter of the Law but miss the heart, the essence, of what the Law intends. The German Church cooperated with Nazi authorities using Romans 13 as the justification. For them, being a Christian meant avoiding trouble at all costs, instead of serving Jesus with courage and passion. They were more concerned with their own theological purity, their reputations, their image than they were with protecting their Jewish friends. We talk about the ethics behind telling lies, like Rahab in the Bible, when those lies actually lead to saving innocent life.
