Large swathes of southeast Asia are bracing for one of the deadliest typhoons in a decade, as Typhoon Yagi makes landfall in China. Over 400,000 people have been evacuated on the Chinese island of Hainan, with schools being forced to close and flights grounded across the region due to catastrophic wind and rain. Winds in Hainan reached over 200km/h as it made landfall, uprooting trees and shattering windows. Hong Kong airport, the Hong Kong-Macau-Zhuhai bridge and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, which were all closed as the edge of the super typhoon passed, reopened on Friday. However, ports and airports across northern Vietnam will remain closed on Saturday, when Yagi is expected to make landfall.
Yagi, which killed 16 in the Philippines earlier this week, is due to reach Vietnam and Laos this weekend, and affect parts of Thailand and Myanmar before finally dissipating.
