What if?
What if ~? の意味は、仮に〜だったらどうする？もし～としたらどうなるだろうか？ややこしい仮定法を気軽に使える便利なフレーズ。
What if ~? の３つの使い方を例文も参考にして学びましょう。
What if 使い方１〜したらどうなるだろう？
未来に起こる可能性のあること（特に望まないこと）について訊ねる質問の頭に What if を使います。
例
What if I lose my job? What shall we do then?
もし私の仕事がなくなったら？その時私たちはどうするべき？
What if it rains this weekend? We won’t be able to go camping.
今週末に雨が降ったらどうする？キャンプには行けないよね。
What if 使い方２（あの時）〜だったらどうなっただろう？
過去の出来事に対して想像する時にも使う事ができます。
起こっていた可能性があった事、或いは全くの架空の出来事にも使います。
例
What if you had slipped? You would’ve fallen off the cliff and died.
もし君が滑ってたらどうなってた？崖から落ちて死んでただろう。
What if we had missed our flight? We didn’t have travel insurance. We would have been in real trouble then.
飛行機に乗り遅れてたらどうなってた？旅行保険もなかったし、そしたら本当に困っただろうね。
これらの使い方からわかるように、what if の疑問文は仮定を表す１つの方法でもあります。
上の例文は次のように言い換える事ができます。
What shall I do if I lose my job?
We won’t be able to go camping if it rains this weekend.
If you had slipped, you would’ve fallen off the cliff and died.
We didn’t have travel insurance. We would have been in real trouble had we missed our flight.
しかし、このように言い換えられた例文は、what if を使った文よりインパクトに欠けます。
最後の２つの例文は、空想の状況で実際には起こっていない「仮定法過去完了」と呼ばれる構文です。
What if 使い方 3 〜してはどうだろう？
何かを提案したり、考え直して欲しいことなどを言う時に使う。
例
Instead of celebrating Xmas this year, what if took the kids on an overseas holiday?
今年はクリスマスをお祝いする代わりに、子ども達を海外へ連れて行ったらどうだろう？

２人のビジネスマンが明日の大切なクライアントとの会議について話しています。
A: I don’t think I’ll be able to make tomorrow’s meeting on time.
B: What if we ask to make it 10:00 instead of 9:00?
A: Yes, that would work for me.
B: OK. I will call them and see if they can shift the meeting to 10:00
A: 明日の会議の時間に間に合わないと思うんだ。
B: ９時じゃなくて、１０時にしてもらえるか聞いてみたらどうだろう？
A: そうだね。それなら間に合うと思う。
B: わかった。僕が先方に電話して会議を１０時に変えられるか聞いてみるよ。
