Today, we hear from Caren Cooper, the assistant director of the Biodiversity Research Lab at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. She is an avian ecologist who is not only a huge advocate for citizen science, but relies on it in her work using birds as indicators of environmental health. She is a regular contributor to the PLOS Blogs network, where she writes Coop’s Scoop on the Citizen Science Blog. Additionally, she hosts monthly chat sessions about citizen science on Twitter.
In this 25-minute episode, Caren Cooper and I discuss:
- How citizen science has changed the way science is done, and the value of collaborating with citizen scientists.
- How “professional” scientists can interact and communicate with citizen scientists more effectively.
- How Caren chooses topics to blog about.
- Why social media and the web has led to unique new methods of science. communication and collaboration.
- Why grad students have to communicate their science to as wide an audience as possible.
