Today, we hear from Ricki Lewis, an author and blogger. She holds a PhD in genetics and is the author of the textbook Human Genetics. She says that “Some years I write textbooks, and will do so for as long as they exist” which is a point we get into during our conversation. She also wrote The Forever Fix: Gene Therapy and the Boy Who Saved It.

When not working on the latest edition of her textbook, my guest writes genetics news the Journal of the American Medical Association, and Medscape Medical News. She also posts at the popular weekly DNA Science blog at the Public Library of Science.

Most recently, she helped launch CureForward, a website about cancer that debuted in May of this year, where she is a contributing writer.

In this 31-minute episode, Ricki Lewis and I discuss:

  • The dying art of textbook writing

  • The sixth sense of a good textbook author

  • The shift from hardcopy to digital in science education

  • The changes that have occurred to make science writing as a profession so difficult

  • The distinction between science writing and simply writing about science

  • Science communication and the public

  • Writing 14 hours a day

  • Resources for science writing

  • Ricki’s favorite sci-fi show this summer

  • And much more…
