“每个孩子都很特别。”成都A4美术馆有一个展馆专为儿童开放。在这个儿童馆里,儿童既是艺术家,也是策展人。2014年,策展人李杰开始创办第一届iSTART儿童艺术节,他希望能让儿童参与艺术创作,不再做艺术的旁观者。“汶川地震过后,美术馆所在的城市出现变化。人们的生活态度改变了,所有人都开始关心他者。”2008年,李杰和艺术家们进入灾区,试图通过艺术对灾区儿童进行灾后心理疗愈。回到城市后,李杰发现需要艺术的不只是灾区儿童,真正的根源在城市。“我们的城市看似在不断提高教育质量,实质上是一种边缘化,让孩子变成了商品,去消费孩子。”为了让孩子理解植物的生长,建筑师、植物学家和园林设计师把美术馆设计成可以生长的空间,里面所有的植物都会生长。孩子们可以定期去浇水,观察植物的生长过程;他们和艺术家共同做了“童年疗养院”,在不同主题的场馆内与儿童探讨“童年”;儿童可以在展馆里自由讨论,自由地发挥创意。“我们不需要通过结果或技能的变化来检验孩子的能力。”在儿童艺术节的活动中,孩子们逐渐充当起了领导者、艺术家和策展人的角色。他们创作动画片、建立“国家”、拍摄纪录片……“当这些孩子不再把这些东西看成是一个单纯的展厅,而把这些看成是自己的生命经验的时候,事情就完全不同了。”“我一年可能要跟一千个这样的小朋友合作展览,所以我每天都在被洗礼,都在刷新我对儿童的认识。”
