On today’s program, we discuss whether Christians should set aside masculine names for God in favor of feminine or gender neutral names. Feminist theologians have been arguing for years that calling God “Father” and “Son” depicts the godhead as an oppressive and abusive patriarchy. For that reason, they argue, we should address God with feminine names or perhaps even gender neutral names. So instead of “Father” and “Son,” we might name God as “Mother” and “child.” Or instead of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we should refer to him as “Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer.” Should Christians set aside masculine names for God in favor of feminine or gender neutral names?
