This episode is one I’m so excited to be sharing with you. I’ve wanted to get my guest, Char Bailey, on the podcast for quite some time! Char is such an inspiration and an incredible role model – in our conversation she shares her experience as a woman of colour who is also a lesbian and autistic and how she brings together her skills, experience and knowledge to help people reflect on everything they have inside themselves and live authentically. Char's a life coach and NLP practitioner who studies spirituality, reiki and breathwork. We talk about the power of owning our identity and the importance of visibility and how this helps others to feel safe and confident to show up as their true, unique, authentic selves. And we dive deep into allyship - the harm caused by the assumptions people make about race, sexuality, autism and other marginalisation’s and some of the biggest challenges of overcoming bias and discrimination. And why, when there’s still over 70 countries in the world where being gay is a crime and people are being killed for their existence that allies are so, so fricking important. So please listen in and listen well. This is such a valuable, open and enlightening episode. I really hope you take away something new to reflect on and help you on your personal development journey both as an individual and an ally. If we want to be inclusive in our business we must understand gender identity and the importance of using pronouns for people in the LGBTQIA+ community. Yet many people struggle to know how to create environments where all genders and people who use different pronouns feel accepted and included. To help you with this I’m giving you 10 action steps that will help you feel more confident and better equipped to share your own pronouns, invite others to share theirs and navigate conversations that call out discrimination and create greater equality for LGBTQIA+ people. Before I even knew I was gay I experienced homophobia. Both within myself (internalised homophobia) and from the outside world. Todays solo podcast episode is a journey through my own personal experiences of what it’s like being a gay woman who came out at 30, over two decades ago. I’m sharing my story of denying and repressing my sexuality for a very long time and the struggles I had to accept that I was gay, as well as some of the homophobia I've experienced against me. My hope is that this episode will help anyone who is struggling with their sexuality right now to know that you are not alone and that even though it can be a frightening, isolating and confusing journey it is absolutely 100% possible for you to feel proud of who you are and love and accept all of who you are. I promise that every one of you listening is as worthy, as loveable and as deserving as everyone else in this world. If you’re questioning your sexuality, struggling with coming out or fully loving and accepting all of your amazing, beautiful self then I am always here for you. This weeks podcast episode is a solo one from me about a topic that I’m extremely passionate about! Those of you who have been listening to the podcast from the beginning may remember that I’ve spoken about allies and allyship before in Episode 2 when I talk about the top 10 things you can do to be a great ally. Today I am taking LGBTQ+ allyship to whole different level! The way I like to look at allyship is as though it’s a journey, a spectrum that’s broken down into 3 steps with each step building on the next: The New Ally – New allies want to learn more about the issues that affect the LGBTQ+ community and they want to get comfortable with speaking up and standing for LGBTQ+ people. They’re supportive but not always sure what to do or how to do it. The Everyday Ally – Everyday allies have learned a lot about LGBTQ+ challenges and struggles. They take action when they hear or see something inappropriate or discriminatory. They’re also committed to continuing to learn and seek out opportunities to be a more effective ally and support their LGBTQ+ friends, family, clients and communities. The Super Ally – Super Allies are powerful advocates for change. They find ways to support LGBTQ+ organisations, be an active part of creating change socially, personally and sometimes politically too. They don’t shy away from debate and they uplift queer voices. Listen in to learn about my top three actions for you whichever level of allyship you are currently at and to hear my reflections on the reasons why allyship is more important now than ever before. Are things really getting better when it comes to LGBTQ+ inclusion and equality? When you read the news headlines and think about all the places in the world where it's still a crime, or even the death penalty to be gay it can be hard to appreciate the progress that's been made over the past couple of decades. In this week's podcast episode I'm talking with Ali Hendry, coach, corporate diversity and inclusion trainer and performance artist. Ali is also a co-host of the Channel 5 TV show The Lesbian Guide To Straight Sex. We discuss the barriers to inclusion in organisations and establishments that still exist today together with the positive action that's being taken to create more inclusive workplaces. You'll also get some insights into what it's been like for two gay women navigating the evolution of the Queer community over the past twenty years! If you're enjoying the podcast, please take a few minutes to leave us a review because the more reviews the podcast gets the more people get to hear about it and the more people we can support and help. And if you're a coach or a wellness entrepreneur then please complete my LGBT Inclusion Survey and add your voice to creating more inclusive coaching and wellness industries. Welcome to the first Queerpreneur Podcast episode of 2021! In September 2020 LGBT+ inclusive education became compulsory by law for schools in England. I’m talking to Emma Fay, the Director of Education at Just Like Us, a brilliant charity empowering LGBTQ+ young people from the classroom to their careers. This episode is a history lesson as well as the complete low down on everything you need to know about what your child will be taught/should be being taught, in the different school years and how you, as a parent can support your child’s school in rolling out the curriculum. This is an exciting landmark moment that is going to change the future for LGBTQ+ young people. The Queer Wellbeing Sessions have been one of my highlights during 2020. It’s been such an honour to dedicate Friday nights to our collective wellbeing and hold space for the queer community and our wonderful allies. Each week I’ve had a different wellness or coaching professional join me to share their insights, wisdom and powerful tips and guidance for how we can support ourselves on our individual healing journey. Last week my guest was Amanda Ashy a holistic nutritionist and mindfulness expert. Amanda shares how she went from working in television as a media producer and director where she was leading a very unhealthy lifestyle working 70-hour weeks and living off coffee and fast food to deciding to follow her passion for nutrition. She trained to become a clinical nutritionist and mindfulness expert and now specialises in supporting families and children with their wellbeing. Hear all about what Amanda calls the Pillars Of Wellness and learn how to reduce stress and increase your wellbeing with some simple daily lifestyle changes. This is such a valuable and important episode, I know you will take so much from it. As you will know if you're a regular listener of this podcast, I am incredibly passionate about creating greater inclusion and access to all wellbeing services for LGBTQ+ people. So, I decided to dedicate the months of November and December to what I'm calling the Queer Wellbeing Sessions where every week, on a Friday in Instagram I chat with a queer wellness or coaching professional about how we can support our own personal mental, emotional, physical and spiritual wellbeing. This week my guest was the brilliant Katie Neeves a trans ambassador, educator and trainer. We cover a lot in this conversation including the recent court ruling against giving consent to young people under 18 for puberty blockers, the time Katie received over 1,000 messages of hate after her open letter to JK Rowling and Katie's own experience of getting the support she needed from a spiritual healer and clairvoyant. This session is thought provoking, educational and inspiring with a powerful account of Katie's own healing journey and transgender transition. In this episode of the Queerpreneur podcast I'm talking to the brilliant Jo Westwood, the codependency coach. Jo is a life coach and author. She helps women escape from codependency and reclaim their lives with confidence. Listen in to hear us talking about the impact of a heteronormative world on LGBTQ+ relationships and how it impacts our self-worth. And how low confidence, self-belief and shame can affect queer people when it comes to the most important relationships in our lives. We also talk about the lack of inclusion for LGBTQ+ people and how you can create more inclusive spaces for LGBTQ+ people with small shifts that will have a big impact. I think you’re going to find this one really interesting and thought provoking! If you enjoyed this episode please make sure to give the podcast a review on itunes, stitcher or wherever you listen. In this week's Queer Wellbeing Session I am joined by Sexuality and Healing Mentor, Isla McLachlan. We talk openly about our personal experiences and some of the challenges we have faced to love and accept all of who we are, especially our sexuality. Isla then gives us a beautiful healing breathwork session which you can experience for yourself when you listen to the podcast (24:50 mins). If you're struggling with your sexuality or still get triggered or feel uncomfortable expressing all of who you are at home, work or in social situations please know you are not alone. Also know that it does get easier and there are lots of wonderful LGBTQ+ people here to support you on your personal healing journey so you can feel free, confident, proud and even excited about being all of your amazing self! You are as worthy and deserving of love and happiness as everyone else on this planet of ours right! If you enjoyed this episode please make sure to give the podcast a review on iTunes (or Google Play, Stitcher, Android, TuneIn, Spotify). And I want to give another nod to the LGBTQ+ inclusion survey I've created to understand the barriers to inclusion for LGBTQ+ people and to understand what we can do to improve representation, visibility and equality for queer wellness and coaching professionals. Please complete the survey to add your voice to this movement: https://sarah-taylor.typeform.com/to/ET29bHCW And when it comes to equal access and feeling safe to reach out to wellbeing service providers LGBTQ+ clients don’t always feel safe because they fear discrimination or lack of understanding of their specific challenges and struggles. "I never use the term falling in love. I really don't like that, it's like falling where? Falling on your face? Falling on your arse? No. I'm really here for people to walk steadily into love with their eyes wide open, with clarity and a strong foundation." I'm talking with Love Coach Michelle Zaylar about the world of love and relationships (and if you're anything like me help in that department is always welcomed!) We get real about the the challenges of navigating dating and finding love as a later in life lesbian or queer person – btw it’s not our fault we find it all a bit of a minefield! And Michelle explains exactly what a conscious relationship is, how to create one and why we’d want them (and believe me you do!). She also busts some myths that you might have about what makes a healthy, loving relationship. So if you’re wondering how to show up in the best way for yourself and those really important people in your life you're going to want to give this episode a listen. I personally got so much out of my conversation with Michelle and I really hope you do too.
