In WAGIC’s very first podcast, hosts Tessa Qiu and Yuan Ren are joined by researchers Dr Monica Merlin (Birmingham School of Art), Luise Guest (White Rabbit Collection), Christina Yuen Zi Chung (University of Washington) and artist Yi Dai to respond to the questions: What is a Chinese woman artist? And Is there such a thing as Chinese women’s art? Our discussion begins in the 1990s when curators and critics (but not necessarily artists themselves) began using ‘woman’s art’ (nuxing yishu) as a critical category. Expanding on issue 4 of the WAGIC blog, we consider how socio-political context, family histories and the transnational feminisms intersect and “complicate the narrative” in how we could interpret artworks by female artists from China. Further ‘complications’ including artists training abroad, the effects of the market, artworks disseminated online and other effects of globalization lead emerging artist Yi Dai to conclude: “it’s not an adjective and noun I would put together to describe myself.” Hosts: Tessa Qiu and Yuan Ren Additional research and input: Linda Pittwood and Nuala Mai Gathercole Lam Special thanks to SOAS Radio.
