The Bonus Army Demonstrations and the destruction of the Anacostia Flats camp are some of the darker moments of the Great Depression in America. It is hard to fault men whose families were starving from trying to get Congress to pay them the promised war bonus early. Evalyn Walsh McLean's account of the situation is certainly one from the perspective of privilege, but she certainly did more for the Bonus Army people than most of the Washington Elite.
