Electric Big-Rigs Don’t Make Sense Even With $40,000 In Tax Credits

The Wall Street Journal reports You Can’t Buy That Diesel Truck.

California’s Advanced Clean Fleets rule says “zero-emission” trucks must be a growing share of semi-truck fleet sales. California imposes a similar mandate for passenger cars. Trouble is, truckers aren’t buying electric big rigs because they can’t afford them even with $40,000 in federal tax credits. Electric trucks cost twice as much as diesel-powered rigs and have a limited driving range—150 miles on average, compared to between 1,000 and 1,500 for diesel trucks. There are also few truck charging stations.
Yet under California’s rules, “dealers are restricted from selling a diesel truck unless they sell a ZEV truck,” the dealer group reports. The result: “New class 8 truck sales (ZEV and Diesel) were down 50 percent year-over-year in June 2024.” Truckers are driving older engines longer because they can’t buy newer diesel models, which results in more pollution.
Dealers say trucks are piling up on their lots—electric models because truckers won’t buy them, and diesel rigs that dealers consequently aren’t allowed to sell. Dealers say they incur monthly interest penalties on unsold truck inventory that can amount to more than $99,000.

Casio says recent cyberattack ’caused system failure’

A cyberattack on systems used by Japanese tech manufacturer Casio caused a system failure that resulted in some services being unavailable to customers.
The company said on Tuesday that the intrusion into its network occurred on October 5.
“We are currently investigating the details, and an external specialist agency is also investigating to confirm whether any personal information or other important information has been leaked,” the company explained in a statement.
Almost exactly a year ago, the company said hackers accessed its education web application ClassPad.net, resulting in the leak of information from customers in 148 countries.

Major U.S. water company hit by cyberattack

. ANew Jersey-based company responsible for providing water to more than 14 million people was hit by a cyberattack which appears to only resulted in the loss of billing systems, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing Monday.

American Water Works Company, which first learned of the attack on Oct. 3, said there does not appear to be any impact to water or wastewater services. No ransomware gang has claimed responsibility for the attack on the company, which has operations in 14 states and serves at least 18 military installations.
There has been a steady increase in cyberattacks against water facilities in recent years, as both states and criminals exploit the sector, which experts deem vulnerable. The White House has spent many months warning about the vulnerabilities of the more than 170,000 water systems in the United States, including by sending a letter to governors in March.

What if these attacks are a diversion while malware is placed into the system, the malware lays dormant until activated.

The only reason we can still buy Gen 3s is because they are grandfathered in, but they are still “unsafe handguns”. We can’t buy more modern Glocks new in gun stores (just secondhand from exempt cops, or from those who moved here with them from other states). She supported the Unsafe Handgun Act and expanded it such that microstamping began to be enforced in 2013. So why does she own an “unsafe handgun”?

California Reports 3rd Possible Case Of Human Bird Flu

California officials are investigating a potential third case of bird flu in humans, with the individual likely getting infected from cows, according to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).
CDPH confirmed the first two human cases of bird flu in California on Oct. 3. while the third possible case was revealed in an Oct. 5 update.
“The case was identified in a Central Valley individual who had contact with infected dairy cattle,” CDPH said in the update. “Specimens are being sent to the CDC to undergo confirmatory testing.”
There is “no known link or contact” between the third case and the first two reported cases, it noted. This suggests “only animal-to-human spread of the virus in California,” it said.
“Like the first two cases, this individual also experienced mild symptoms, including eye redness or discharge (conjunctivitis). None of the individuals have been hospitalized,” the department said.

US Detects China Interference in 2024 Election

The country’s adversaries are stepping up efforts to influence the U.S. election, including down-ballot races, intelligence officials told the press on Monday.
“We’ve continued to see actors ramp up their activities as we get closer to Election Day,” Voice of America quoted one anonymous intelligence official as saying. These actors “recognize that individuals are already voting— Americans are already voting—and operations can have a greater impact as we get closer,” they added.
Officials said China, Russia, Iran, and Cuba have sought to “launder their narratives” into election discourse, as well as aggravate divisions among Americans through hot-button issues such as immigration.
