In our weekly Research Culture Uncovered conversations we are asking what is Research Culture and why does it matter? This episode is part of Season 5, where we are investigating the impact of impact on research culture. In this episode your host, Ged, is joined by Dr Faith Welch and Jaylene Wehipeihana.

Faith is the inaugural Research Impact Manager at the University of Auckland where Jaylene is the inaugural Research Manager Vision Mātauranga. Before moving to Aotearoa New Zealand Faith worked at the University of Bristol in an impact role supporting academics in the Science and Engineering faculties. Prior to that she worked for the UK's Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, or BBSRC, in innovation and business engagement.

Jaylene has worked at the University of Auckland for over 6 years in research management, strategy development and implementation. Prior that she worked for the Health Research Council in Aotearoa New Zealand.

You can connect to Faith via LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/faith-welch-b6a11924/) or Twitter (https://twitter.com/FaithUOA). You can connect to Jaylene via LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/jayleneuoa/) or Twitter (https://twitter.com/Jaylene74)

I ask Faith about the commonalities and differences between the UK and Aotearoa New Zealand in how the culture around impact is developing and Jaylene helps me to understand how to properly engage Māori in the research system. Their key messages are:

  • Impact culture has been driven from the ground up and not via assessment
  • The pandemic has helped build on the trust between policy makers and researchers
  • Building trust is absolutely crucial and it takes time and that time can be much longer with some communities
  • But once trust is built impact can fly
