This week on Let's Talk Ed, Zahi Atallah and Chris Forde host Dr. Phil Thorsen and Ms. Marcia Thorsen, both experienced psychology practitioners, to discuss the development of a comprehensive mental health toolkit for students. Phil is a professor of Psychology, and Marcia is a practicing licensed therapist. Building on our previous series exploring the general impact of mental health in college, this series dives deeper into practical solutions and strategies. This series is a continuation of our summer 2024 focus on keeping the college promise for learners.

Segment 1: "Mental Health Challenges in Higher Education: Understanding the Stressors”. In this first segment, we describe the various stressors faced by students in higher education. We explore the concept of a toxic environment and its impact on mental health. We talk about how the mental health of faculty and staff is integral to college success, in addition to the mental health of learners. “Doing more with less” comes back as a major cause of toxic college environments.

Segment 2: "Effective Interventions: Tools and Strategies for Mental Health Support in College" The second segment presents interventions that work in higher education settings. We discuss the importance of empathy, taking the other person's perspective, and implementing supportive strategies. The tone is set at the very top of the institution, and focuses on the growth and development of all. A healthy environment is critical for student success and relies on the implementation of established and successful tools.

Segment 3: "Building Resilience: Creating a Supportive and Thriving College Environment”. In this final segment, we focus on fostering a Growth Mindset, and explore the concepts of Grit, Emotional Intelligence, and Anti-Fragility. These concepts are key to building resilience in college environments and supporting the students' overall well-being and success.

Join us as we explore solutions to the mental health dilemma in higher education. Don't forget to Like, Share, and Subscribe to Let's Talk Ed to join a movement aimed at revolutionizing education and supporting student success!
