On Let's Talk Ed this week, we (Zahi Atallah and Chris Forde) approach the critical issue of certain populations of college students not reaching the college promise due to lack of targeted support. We explore the challenges faced by diverse populations of college students and explore solutions to empower their success. And we finish by offering possible solutions to make the college promise a reality for more students, and wannabe students.

In segment 1entitled "Unveiling the Divide: Describing the Population Groups Not Reaching the College Promise”, we identify the diverse population groups that are falling short of the college promise, shedding light on the systemic barriers they encounter. These population groups include among others: rural students, veterans, ethnic and racial groups, the LGBTQ+ community, disabled students, working adults, adults with depends, etc.

In segment 2: "Identifying the Needs of Students to Fulfill the College Promise”, we explore the specific needs of these students, highlighting the importance of tailored support to ensure their success in higher education. We also speak to practices that continue to hurt or disenfranchise these student populations in higher education.

And finally, in segment 3 entitled: "Solutions to Ensure Students in Need Reach the College Promise: Empowerment!”, we offer actionable solutions and strategies to empower students in need, bridging the gap and revolutionizing higher education for all. We stress solutions such as credit for prior learning (CPL), competency-based education (CBE), multiple measures assessment (MMA), co-requisite remediation, variable length terms, counseling services, and retention specialist that support students in their individualized needs.
