“Art is considered the domain of the heart.” This is how Sarah Kaufmann and her colleagues at the Washington Post put it in a 2017 article entitled, This is Your Brain on Art. This idea is likely why the arts at The Lovett School are a dimension of most of our students’ journeys. After all, when we think about whole child learning, our values, and our mission, the heart, in partnership with the head, is centered in all that we do.

David Eccles, Dr. Tim Pitchford, and Amy Story join Jessica Sant (Lovett Chief Engagement Officer and host of Living Lovett) to discuss the arts education available to our students and why those opportunities seem to have such an impact. Each of our guests on this episode are practicing artists in addition to being educators—learn how that dynamic shows up in the classroom. This episode is a prescient follow-up to last week’s episode where so many of the Class of 2012 noted how important the arts were to their development.
