In this episode I'm excited to be speaking with long time Durango community member Maureen May, a well respected and accomplished artist who uses a variety of different media in her work. She grew up in a supportive family with 15 children and parents who found the time to expose her to museums, opera and theatre in her hometown of Chicago. Throughout her life and artistic career she has been blessed with wonderful teachers who pushed her to reach beyond the safe boundaries. In her words “depending on the message or image I am trying to convey I use abstract to representational, printmaking to assemblage, self-portrait to political statement.” Variety is an integral part of her life and is reflected in her art through drawing, monotypes, solar etching, sculpture, linoleum cuts and painting. Maureen can also be found frequently acting on stage at the Durango Arts Center or with the Merely Players where she expresses her natural skill as an actor. In addition to her visual art and acting career, she plays violin with a local community group, something she has done since childhood. In the past she has been part owner of Studio & Gallery in Durango where she exhibited her work and that of other local artists. Currently her artwork can be seen at Earthen Vessel Gallery at 934 Main Avenue in Durango, Colorado. She also participates annually in the KDUR Furniture As Art auction by donating one of her unique pieces. You can visit her website at www.maureenmayart.com or her Instagram @themaureenmay.
