The stretch from June 16 through July 7 of 2024 was amongst the deadliest in the recorded history of the Grand Canyon. Four hikers lost their lives during that period, with the assumption (it's too early for official causes to be released) that some, or perhaps all, were heat-related. One of those fatalities was Scott Sims, a 69-year-old entrepreneur from Austin. Mr. Sims had been in the Canyon many times before, and was heading to Phantom Ranch with his niece and her husband on June 29. He never made it. Now, Jessica and Greg Ryan—Canyon first-timers—share their story just 15 days after the most traumatic experience of their lives, hoping their personal tragedy can serve as a lesson for others.
