After three years, the final report of the Royal Commission into Defence and Veterans Suicide is in. It reveals that at least 1,677 defence force members died by suicide between 1997 and 2021.

On World Suicide Prevention Day, we look more broadly at the appalling number of deaths by suicide in this country, and what actions might bring that figure down.

John Brogden AM knows what it's like to come close to the brink. In his new book Profiles of Hope, John speaks to 15 Australians who survived suicide and found their way back to a better life.
