Jesus’ first sermon in his home congregation in Nazareth suggests otherwise. He reads words from many years earlier and emphatically states that they are relevant to today. Today can be frightening for us, because today forces us to lay aside our nostalgia for the past and our dreams for the future, focusing us on what is immediate and urgent. Jesus’ words that day were so frightening that the crowd gathered tried to throw him off a cliff! In today however, we find meaning and focus for right now.
