“Be Still”

During the Advent Season we repeatedly heard the message from God: “Do not be afraid.” But how do we live without fear? We can decide we won’t live in fear. We can discipline ourselves mentally. We can read encouraging words and spend time with courageous people. But ultimately we will discover that to live in courageous faith is a daily journey, not a one-time fix.

The Psalmist declared that “we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging” (Psalm 46: 2-3). In other words, even if everything around us fails us or threatens us, we don’t have to live in fear. But how?

Embedded in that psalm is a simple instruction: “Be still, and know that I am God” (46:10).

We’re going to spend five Sundays on that single phrase. Within it lies a number of insights as to how we can walk daily with God, experiencing him and the peace and joy he brings.
