Preface

The Conference of the Birds, written in the 13th Century by Farid ud-Din Attar, is a Sufi tale about the journey of the seven Maqams. In the poem, the birds of the world gather to decide who is to be their sovereign, as they have none. The hoopoe, the wisest of them all, suggests that they should find the legendary Simorgh. The hoopoe leads the birds, each of whom represents a human fault which prevents humankind from attaining direct heart connection with the Divine.

The hoopoe explains to the pilgrim birds that they must cross seven valleys in order to reach the abode of the Simorgh.

Our version is bit more straightforward and contemporary. We journey through four of the seven Maqams. This quest is personal and unique, as it is for anyone who sets their foot upon the Path.

Sufism, as we may have explained before, is not a religion. It is the personal and intimate way of anyone who wishes to reclaim their heart and mind; it is with a guide and a set of tools to help remember who we are, where we come from and where we are going.

Levels of the Nafs: A Fantasy Adventure

shaykh ibrahim ansari

Maqams are a way of mapping the levels of the bad habits and attachments Sufis label Nafs. A Maqam is a stage or perhaps like a village that is characterized by certain unique behaviors by the people that live there. In this version, a distinctive Path runs through each village that is sometimes visible to those who know what to look for.
