She Can Make – Show Notes Episode 19

This week’s episode is brought to you by Plum Deluxe.

Today’s segments include:

• In the Workroom • Alterations • Skills Lab • A Review or Two • Crafting with Kids • Events Spotlight • And from the Mail Bag

Grab a cup of tea, make yourself comfortable and let’s start making.

Thank you so much for joining us!

In The Workroom:

Lindsey is on a bit of a finishing kick for her projects in the works. She is also hoping to get some holiday sewing done if there is time.

Kate is continuing to work on her Dark and Stormy Sweater.

Kate got her second ugly Christmas sock done; she thinks that the Regia Pairfect might just be the cure for second sock syndrome.

Kate has had a chance to try out her spiffy new Roger Hawkins wool combs made in Peterborough ON. She also attended her Next Step Wheel Class @ Gemini Fibre, which is how she decided on those combs.

She is also learning a lot about prepping a whole fleece. Find out what’s been good and not so good about her experience.

Alterations:

Lindsey isn’t running into too many issues this week, but that’s because she is finishing up projects already in the works.

She is also eyeing up her UFO pile and figuring out what to keep working on and what to cave and just turn back into balls of yarn.

Kate comes to the realization that mostly every pair / set of needles in her house are occupied in some fashion or another. She also thinks a sort through the UFO pile is in order.

Skills Lab:

Lindsey planned to do this fun skills lab giving all kinds of pointers on learning to cable for the first time. It’s nowhere near as hard as she thought it would be so the list is going to shorter than anticipated, but here it is:

1. It’s not hard, just drive in and try it! In a class or with the help of youtube. 2. You do need patience and time. The first row or set that you do is going to take so much longer than you think. 3. I recommend metal needles if you are a tight knitter at all, I worry for my wooden Chiaogoo ones with every cable. 4. I also recommend getting a cable needle the same size or slightly bigger than the needles you are using. It keeps the stitches tight and secure on the needle. 5. Take breaks if needed, it can be effort and concentration intensive. 6. And seriously, just do it. We talk about this all the time. Most of our major stumbling blocks are not skill based, but mental. This is not hard, it just takes time.

A Review or Two:

Kate is reviewing her Next Step Wheel Class @ Gemini Fibre

Kate enjoyed her previous course Gemini Fibre, so this one was highly anticipated.

Crafting With Kids:

Lindsey and Miss O tackle some late season Christmas cards for upcoming family events. It’s a fun endeavour in colouring, gluing, and stickering blank cards to turn them into Christmas masterpieces.

Lindsey discusses how and why Miss O mixes up Michael’s and the dollar store.

Events Spotlight:

Kate discusses starting up a brand spanking new Yarn & Fibre Festival in Fenelon Falls, ON in June! We’ve started preparations to bring you the Kawartha Yarn & Fibre festival, and right now the call for vendors is out. If you’re an independent small to medium sized business interested in vending @ a fully accessible and indie focused festival in early June in the Kawarthas, please reach out to us at kawarthayff@gmail.com to get on the vendor list.

From the Mail Bag:

What’s your favourite gadget? I need a good gift for a knitter in my life.
