Author Kathleen Gerard discusses her Yorkie Sicily, who was the inspiration for her novel The Thing Is. Sicily passed two months after the book was released and the signs started flooding in, culminating in an undeniable birthday message from the other side. Kathleen is the author of In Transit, which won "Best Romantic Fiction" at The New York Book Festival, as well as Cold Comfort, a story that deals with the bonds of family. Her most recent novel The Thing Is, a romantic comedy that deals with the nature of grief when a blocked and depressed romance writer has her life unwittingly changed by a crafty therapy dog, a Yorkshire terrier named Prozac with supernatural insights into the human condition. Kathleen's short fiction has been nominated and awarded many literary prizes including The Saturday Evening Post "Great American Fiction" Prize, The Mark Twain House Humor Prize, The Erma Bombeck Writing Award and Best New American Voices, all national prizes in literature. Her prose and poetry have been widely published in literary journals, magazines, anthologies and broadcast on NPR.
