It is a “total, all-encompassing fear” that dominates all aspects of life – that is how Ukrainians who lived under occupation in 2022-23 until they were liberated or escaped described it to me. In a new study, I collect accounts from Ukrainians to understand what their stories tell us about Russian occupation practices. News about the war in Ukraine are often dominated by front line movements and the counting of kilometres of advance or retreat. Through in-depth interviews, I aimed to instead shed light on the experiences of those that populate these spots on the map and the human cost of living under Russian ‘rule.’ ---------- Julia Friedrich is Research Fellow at the Global Public Policy Institute (GPPi).
